Oxalis Logistics: A Journey Toward Safer Navigation

5 min read

Safety at the core of every logistics journey

For Oxalis Logistics, safety has always been the guiding principle. With 200 trucks in Germany, 600 in the UK, and a small operation in the Czech Republic, the company moves millions of litres of fuel and gas every single day. Transporting hazardous goods leaves no room for error - every road, every turn, and every delivery must be carefully managed.

“At Oxalis Logistics, we have a very strong focus on safety,” explains Peter Reischl, Head of IT Business Systems at Oxalis Logistics. “We deliver fuels and gases, so we’re transporting hazardous goods, and we need to make sure we don’t end up with a truck stuck in a narrow road or in the headlines," he adds.

At Oxalis Logistics, delivery routes have been established and thoroughly risk-assessed over many years, helping avoid accident hotspots, schools, restricted areas, and heavy congestion wherever possible. Drivers also need clear, safe approaches to customer sites, especially where large vehicles enter car-focused locations. To support these established routes with in-cab guidance and real-time traffic updates, Oxalis has started adopting Sygic Professional Navigation.

Sygic specialises in GPS navigation software and location-based services for smartphones, tablets, and in-dash infotainment systems. Its enterprise solutions support fleets with turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic information, speed camera warnings, truck-specific routing, and other functionalities that help drivers reach their destinations.

From paper sheets to digital route guidance

When Oxalis Logistics purchased Sygic licenses in 2024, they began a careful, methodical process of testing to ensure Sygic would reflect the routes they had already established. Liam Smith, who leads the UK rollout at Oxalis Logistics, remembers it well: “We spent the last six or seven months checking every single route. For every job, someone went out and compared - did the sat nav follow the route we had defined? And if not, why not?”

Ahead of implementation, the team reviewed each of the 4,000+ routes and, where needed, added waypoints or route blockers so the guidance matched our established safety standards for every site and approach.

“It was a lot of work,” Liam Smith admits, “but it gave us confidence that the rollout of navigation will meet the high standards we already have.”

A tried and tested tech rollout

Rather than switching all 800 trucks at once, Oxalis Logistics is taking a location-based rollout approach. Germany is taking a similar path, starting with Hamburg as the first pilot. From there, the solution will spread step by step to other depots. By doing it this way, they can build on the experience from each rollout, fine-tune training, and make sure drivers everywhere begin with the same level of confidence.

“This way of working is built into our processes,” Peter Reischl says. “Predefined routes were always seen as the safest way. Now, with Sygic, we have the possibility to build all of that knowledge into an app. But to convince our colleagues that the routes will always be accurate, we need to prove it’s reliable,” he adds.

As testing has continued, trust has started to grow. In nearly all cases, Sygic’s guidance matched perfectly. And when it didn’t, the adjustments were straightforward. But the real breakthrough came with real-time traffic information. Suddenly, drivers were no longer trapped in jams, wasting time and fuel.

“If there’s an accident on the motorway and Sygic shows a faster alternative, drivers can take it,” Peter Reischl explains. “They can be safe in the knowledge that the alternative route is safe, because we’ve worked with Sygic to block routes that we would otherwise want to avoid. Now our drivers can more easily avoid traffic — they have flexibility — without compromising safety.”

Meeting the needs of a new generation of logistics drivers

The decision is also about preparing for the future of the workforce. Many of the experienced drivers who knew the routes by heart are retiring. The younger generation, meanwhile, is asking for navigation tools they are already familiar with.

“Younger drivers have grown up with sat navs,” Peter Reischl says. “They’ve been asking for it in our trucks. For them, it makes the job less stressful and much safer.”

With ADR compliance, route restrictions, and site-specific entry rules built into the system, our drivers can rely less on paper instructions and more on routes delivered to them in real time - without losing the knowledge captured in Oxalis’ long-established, risk-assessed routes.

Looking ahead to even safer bulk fuel transportation

Oxalis Logistics is still in the testing phase, but the direction is clear: safety and trust will guide every step.

“The main goal for us is safety,” Peter Reischl concludes. “If we save time and reduce emissions as a result, that’s an added benefit. But first and foremost, we want every delivery to be safe — and Sygic is helping us build the trust we need to move forward.”
