About Sygic

We imagine guiding each and every person on the move.

Our mission is to enable people to go anywhere and explore any place with confidence.

Sygic was established in 2004, with its primary focus being on GPS navigation software. From the very beginning we have had the dream that every man and woman should be familiar with the Sygic name. Today, with over 20 000 000 Sygic navigation app users, that dream is well on its way to becoming reality.

Let’s dig into Sygic’s roots...

The Sygic story actually dates back 2 years prior to the year of the company’s establishment, when – in 2002 – two prominent people from what was to become Sygic; Michal Stencl and Viliam Sameliak, were brought together by a new business opportunity. Michal was developing an operating system called QubeOS at the time and Viliam was the CEO of Gotive, a company that developed mobile devices. Their joint mission at that time was to port the Gotive mobile devices with QubeOS. Later, this successful mission resulted in the establishment of a new company: Sygic – the primary focus of which was creating navigation software for mobile devices.

Gradually, more and more people joined this newly founded company. It seemed the first startup a la Silicon Valley had emerged in Slovakia where fresh graduates actually had a real chance of being able to make a difference in the business world. Many of these people were true visionaries who - through their excellence - brought the most to Sygic and reinvented the history of navigation software. Those who had exceled the most received the possibility of becoming company shareholders. With their vision, they created the first navigation app for the iPhone and the second for the Android.

Today Sygic has more than 100 employees, who - through their inspired vision - create products used by millions of people all over the world.

The very word Sygic was created by Sygic’s founder, Michal Stencl. There were so many factors to consider in naming the new company: the right name had to be neutral in every language, easily memorable, and the sound of it would have to evoke something technological. Moreover, it’s very important for this name to “look” appealing in written form. If one imagines a line, the letters “y” and “g” rest below this line, so the word itself isn’t anchored only above the line, giving it a visual structure. But the most important story behind the quest for the name was that there should be absolutely zero pre-branding Google hits. This meant that all Sygic search results, at that time and in the future, would have to solely signify a mention of our company.

Putting all these factors together was nearly impossible. And that’s how the word Sygic was born.

Innovations are Sygic’s core

Every two years we bring a new generation of product. And we have come quite a long way in getting closer to our customers – moving away from the purely B2B model, we broke onto the mass market in 2008 and went on to achieve full channel independence in 2010 thanks to AppStores.

Interesting Sygic Facts

The number of downloads from Google Play reaches 30 000 daily, which equals 5% of all Android smartphones sold in the world in one day.

The figures regarding installations of Sygic app for iOS and Android devices is 20 000 000. This number represents all the users who have launched the Sygic app at least once.

Sygic app navigates 2 300 000 users a month.

On both platforms - iOS and Android - Sygic navigates 38 000 000 kilometers on a monthly basis, this means we clock up some 456 000 000 kilometers a year. This number also represents three times the distance between the Sun and the Earth, 1280 times a distance to the Moon and back, or 11 400 trips around the planet.

The number of hours spent Sygic navigating is 15 200 000 a year, which represents 1735 years or 20 human lives. If we save our users even 10% of their time navigating from point A to B, we have saved time worth 2 human lifespans. That’s why we take navigation seriously.
